On the subject of tools and getting them cheaply. Usually the big box stores have "kid" tools which are perfect for patio gardens for a third of the cost in the early spring. Sometimes they even have seeds with them if you are not ready to switch to heirloom. I personally buy heirloom only when I am ready to save the seeds from that particular species. But they are worth to extra cost per pkt because you dont have to buy every year.
So back to tools they are usually funny colors and not as tough but you really don't need farm tough tools in a patio do ya? I have also found that container gardeners take better care of there tools. Strange but true lol. Good luck
