Because we live on the coast we have gathered sea shells and either crushed them or laid them on the soil where we don't want the slugs to eat the plants. We have also planted the odd African marigold as a further deterrent. So far it seems to be working. I was thinking of greasing the container so that the slugs can't even climb up the pot but the sea shells seems to be working at the moment.
